Sonia Gandhi is an Italian-born Indian politician who has been chairman of the ‘Indian National Congress’ party since 1998. She was re-elected for the fourth time in 2010, becoming the longest-serving president in the party’s 125-year history. She is also chair of the Lok Sabha’s ‘Single Democratic Alliance,’ a role she has held since 2004. Sonia Gandhi is the first foreign-born citizen to become the party ‘s president since India’s independence in 1947. Raised in Italy, she came to India after marrying Rajiv Gandhi, a scion of the politically influential Nehru-Gandhi family long affiliated with the ‘Indian National Congress.’ She held away from politics in the early years of her marriage and vehemently declined to enter politics even after her husband’s tragic assassination in 1991. Yet her declining fortunes in the intervening years inspired her to join the party as a primary member. She has since played a significant role in Indian politics and is still considered an influential figure in the foreign political scenario. In 2007 and 2008, she was named ‘Time 100 most influential people in the world.’
